 What is the Difference Between Whole Grain and Whole Wheat? First, let's examine what "whole" means. If you've ever been at a fast food joint and asked what is the difference between white bread and whole wheat bread, chances are you will get an answer of "whole grain bread." This is true, but not the whole story. There is some difference there, and it's one that affects many people.

The first difference between the two is the way in which the products are digested. For most people, the only real difference in the product is the type of flour used to make it. Many people believe that by consuming more whole wheat, or even whole-grain products such as brown rice, that they are eating healthier because they are having less refined grains in their diet. This may be true in some regards, but it is not necessarily healthier overall.

The second difference that is often made is that wheat is starchy rather than unrefined. While this does affect one's blood sugar levels somewhat (which can be a good thing depending on one's situation), it does not affect one's overall health in any significant way. Whole grains are also much higher in fiber, so this can also be a benefit for one's diet. The difference between these two grains lies in the way in which they are digested.



Many people have had the mistaken idea that whole grains have to be quite coarse in order to be whole. This misconception is actually just a misunderstanding and is not true at all. Many different kinds of flour are used to make bread, pasta, crackers, and many other foods. Even oatmeal is not truly made from whole oats, it is just the method in which the flour is dehydrated and refined. Whole grains come from many different types of grains and can vary greatly in texture.

Perhaps, the most important question that many people have is what exactly is the difference between whole wheat and whole grain? This is also a question that many dieticians tend to avoid or even misrepresent. Basically, the only real difference between the two is their classification as whole foods. They are technically classified as whole foods because they contain all of the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that you would expect from an entire food. This is different than what many people think of as being whole, as most have been stripped of almost all nutritional value.

While many whole wheat products are indeed good for you, the problem lies in the processing and lack of nutrition that is stripping them of their taste and value. In order to retain their unique flavor, some manufacturers will replace some of the nutrients with cheaper flour such as cornmeal. With this being said, I urge you to try some whole-wheat pasta and bread today and in no time you will see how beneficial they truly are.
