 What is dementia? It is a mental disorder characterized by loss of memory, thought disorder, and the inability to focus on objects, activities, people, and events. Dementia can affect both elderly and young people equally. Its causes are not known, but certain risk factors have been identified like hypertension, diabetes, alcohol abuse, smoking, and too much consumption of wine or spirits. What is dementia and what can you do to prevent it?

What is dementia? Dementia is a cognitive impairment that occurs due to the loss of memory, attention, concentration, judgment, social skills, and the ability to perform daily functions. It can be divided into types like vascular dementia, corticobasal degeneration, or progressive nonfluent aphasia. In the case of vascular dementia, the brain cells get affected. On the other hand, in the case of corticobasal degeneration and progressive nonfluent aphasia, the brain cells are damaged in a reversible manner. The symptoms of these types of dementia are mild to severe memory loss, slow mental processes, and behavioral changes.



Symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are evident for every person at any stage of the disease. It is a form of dementia that affects the central nervous system, memory, thinking, language, and behavior. Signs and symptoms of this disease start to show after the age of 65 years. The earlier the onset, the more severe the consequences are on the individual. AD affects the entire family patterning even the social and personal life of an individual.

What is dementia? Dementia can be treated with medicines, counseling, behavioral therapy, cognitive rehabilitation and transplantation. When the brain is not functioning normally due to brain injury, disease process, a patient requires constant care. Signs and symptoms of memory loss, forgetfulness, talking slower than normal, unable to focus on external things, losing interest in hobbies and thoughts, inability to remember names, inability to remember things that were recently learned are tell-tale indications of this debilitating disease.

It is known that genetics play a vital role in determining the progression of Alzheimer's disease. Some of the common causes of dementia are aging, head injuries, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, viral diseases, alcohol abuse and substance abuse. There are also several environmental risk factors such as poor diet, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, lack of exercise, too much caffeine intake, head trauma and aging.

Dementia however is a cause of concern and needs to be addressed immediately. It is important that we understand the causes of dementia so that the use of medicines can be regulated and the possibility of an early recovery from this debilitating mental disorder can be realized.
